The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will open an office in Bulgaria in 2012, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said at a joint briefing with US Ambassador to Sofia James Warlick on Wednesday.
The Regional Director of DEA, Mark Destito, visited Bulgaria on Wednesday to meet with Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov and discussed ongoing US-Bulgarian collaboration in combating drug trafficking and details regarding the opening of DEA's office in Sofia.
"The decision to open a DEA office in Sofia reflects the close and mutually beneficial relationship we share and the success we have had combating narcotics trafficking together. To date, this collaboration has resulted in the disruption of the activities of significant criminal groups and the seizure of over 1,500 kilograms of illegal narcotics," state-run Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) cited Warlick as saying.
DEA began collaborating with the interior ministry's General Directorate for Combating Organized Crime on several investigations involving significant drug trafficking organizations operating in the region in 1990s.
