Translators of Bulgarian Literature – Cultural Ambassadors across Europe

The Translating Bulgarian Literature: Ambassadors of Culture in Europe public event was held at the EP, gathering more than 200 people. The ambassador of this country in Belgium, representatives of the Croatian embassy, of the translators’ guild in the European institutions, also local publishers, representatives of the Creative Europe programme and others attended the event. The major problems identified by the translators were the insufficient funding, the fear of foreign publishers to pay attention to Bulgarian literature and last but not least – the lack of young prepared translators. “Bulgaristics is on its way to disappear as a specialty in Europe and the trend must be stopped,” said Helena Quimann, a Bulgarian – Dutch translator. According to Marie Vrinat-Nikolov, a linguist and a lecturer in France, more stimuli are needed to be created for a growing number of students to study Bulgarian and options for their professional growth should be provided as well.
