Bulgarian special branch police units arrested three people during an operation codenamed The Crooks, in the elite Sofia borough of Lozenets, the Interior Ministry said on May 31."The operation was aimed at businessmen, who are representatives in Bulgaria of a large German company," Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov told Darik radio. The three arrested are said to have misappropriated large sums of money from foreign investors."This is a case where an important foreign investor attempted to invest in the country but got involved with the culprits. In the aftermath, instead of the money being used as designated, it was used to purchase property and office equipment," Tsvetanov said.The foreigners were from a "large German company" but no further details were released.According to media reports, the Germans had wired more than one million leva in three tranches. But the Bulgarians misappropriated the funds and "wasted them" at the expense of the Germans, the report said."This is an operation to protect foreign investments in the country," the Interior Minister said.In the aftermath of the raid, according to Bulgarian media, there is an increased police presence in the Lozenets borough of Sofia. Four separate addresses in the city were searched, and a large quantity of documents seized.
