Construction works were launched on Tuesday on the expansion of the passenger gallery at Terminal 2 of the Sofia airport which should raise its annual capacity by 200,000 passengers from the current 2.6 million.
The project is worth 2.0 million levs ($1.4 million/1.0 million euro) and is funded from the state budget, airport officials told reporters at a media event in Sofia.
The construction works, planned to be completed in four months, will be carried out by local firm AT Engineering 2000 and will not disrupt the operation of the terminal.
"The reason for the extension is the ever rising passenger numbers and the need for better and faster service," transport minister Ivaylo Moskovski said at the ground-breaking.
The expansion will equip the terminal with four new exits, three for departure passengers and one for baggage claim, according to the Sofia News Agency (Novinite.com)
Terminal 1 of the airport is older and much smaller.
