Sofia Airport Eyes Passenger Traffic Growth of 8.0% in 2014

The operator of the Sofia Airport expects an 8.0% increase in passenger traffic in 2014, the company's executive director said.

After a 1.1% rise in passenger traffic in 2013, Sofia airport is expecting an even more solid influx of passengers this year, Hristo Shterionov told reporters at a ceremony marking the arrival of the inaugural Belgrade-Sofia flight of flag carrier Air Serbia.

The number of passengers serviced by the Sofia Airport reached a record 3,504,326 in 2013.

Bulgarian transport minister Danail Papazov said at the inauguration he expects over 30,000 passengers on the Sofia-Belgrade route by the end of this year. The route will be serviced daily by Air Serbia.

Papazov also said that by mid-May, Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air will introduce flights from Sweden's coastal town of Malmo to Sofia while in June, Croatian company Dalmatian will start regular flights from the Bulgarian capital to Zagreb.
