Sofia Airport April Passenger Traffic Falls 5.0% Y/Y
Thursday, 01 January 1970
Passenger traffic via Bulgaria’s Sofia Airport in April fell by 5.0% year-to-year to 277,207, whereas cargo throughput increased by an annual 20% to 1,537 tonnes, the airport said.
The drop in passenger numbers was mostly due to the suspension of Aerosvit and NIKI's flights to Sofia in the beginning of 2013, the airport said in a statement.
The air carrier to see the sharpest annual growth in passenger numbers in April was low-cost easyJet, which recently launched direct flights from the London-Stansted and Berlin-Schönefeld airports to the Bulgarian capital.
Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Alitalia, Air Malta and Tarom too registered an increase in the number of passengers on their flights to and from Sofia.
The increase in cargo traffic comes on the back of a 33% rise in cargo handled by integrated cargo carriers and 8.0% bigger volumes of cargo transported by regular international operators.
