Shah Deniz II Consortium Picks TAP
Thursday, 01 January 1970
The Shah Deniz II consortium chose the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) as its preferred gas transportation route to Europe over the rival Nabucco West project, the leading company in Nabucco West, Austria's OMV, said.
"The Nabucco project is over for us," OMV Chief Executive Gerhard Roiss told a news conference, as quoted by Reuters.
TAP is planned to ship Azeri gas via Greece, Albania and the Adriatic to Italy, while Nabucco West was designed to carry gas under the Black Sea, Bulgaria and on to Hungary and Austria. Both projects, which were competing for access to gas from the giant Azeri Shah Deniz II field in the Caspian Sea aim to lessen Europe's gas dependence on Russia.
