Right-wing opposition Coalition Calls for Lifting Shale Gas Ban

The right-wing Blue Coalition urged Parliament to scrap a recent ban on shale gas exploration and extraction using hydraulic fracturing.

The Blue Coalition has filed with Parliament a proposal for amendments, based on an opinion of the Geology Institute with the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, state-run Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) reported, quoting the coalition's co-chairman Ivan Kostov.

The Blue Coalition accuses the economy minister of failing to stage an information campaign to present the advantages of shale gas extraction.

The Blue Coalition's motion comes just a fortnight after the ban was imposed amid nationwide environmentalists protests.

The ban will remain in force as long as there exist public concerns over the environmental impact of hydraulic fracturing, BTA reported, quoting, GERB deputy floor leader Valentin Nikolov.
