Regional natural gas distribution project the largest of its kind in Europe

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis signaled the start of "an ambitious project" that will put Eastern Macedonia and Thrace on the gas distribution network during a tour at the city of Xanthi on Thursday.

The premier was attending an event by Public Gas Distribution Company (DEDA) about expanding gas distribution to the capitals of the region's five prefectures of Drama, Evros, Kavala, Rhodopi, Thassos and Xanthi, after the completion of the TAP and IGB pipelines.

In the first stage of the project, he said, six cities will be interconnected by gas pipelines some 500 km long, incorporating border areas into the national energy policy.

"That's only the start, as DEDA's 5-year plan is now the largest gas distribution project in Europe," he explained, that "will eventually link another 34 cities, providing energy to 70,000 consumers, who may total over 200,000 by the year 2036." The project will create nearly 6,000 new jobs, Mitsotakis stressed. An average household will be able to save over 25% on its heating bills, he asserted, and the project will also boost local economies.

This new, significant investment begins almost at the same time as the government's National Recovery Plan, said Miitsotakis, and he emphasized that the plan's top priority is 'green' transition.
