The European Commission officially confirmed that Bulgaria will become a part if the new European Border and Coast Guard Agency. This became clear from a letter received in response to a question by Bulgarian MEP with Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (CEDB) and European People’s Party (NPP) Emil Radev, who asked the EU Commission to clarify whether the proposal for the European Border and Coast Guard would be applied to all EU member states or only to those within the Schengen area, the press centre of the CEDB announced.
In its written response, the EU Commission explained that the regulation concerning the European Border and Coast Guard would be applied to those external borders where applied the provisions of Title II of the Schengen Borders Code, which includes Bulgaria.
I.e. the regulation on the new Agency will apply to Bulgaria although the country is not a part of the Schengen area.
