Local real estate investment trust Health and Wellness said it has awarded a contract for the preparation of the design and investment project for an airport near the town of Gotse Delchev, in southwestern Bulgaria, to local civil engineering company Straplan.
The 1.76 million lev ($1.23 million/900,000 euro) contract includes the preparation of a site development plan. The design has to be completed by November 30, 2014.
The airport, to be built on the site of a former military airfield, will be strategically situated near the country's winter, cultural and spa resorts. It will service civil flights, as well as charter passenger flights.
Future passenger traffic is estimated to reach 100,000 annually by 2015.
The airport will cover a total area of 88 hectares. The existing 2,100-metre long and 25- metre wide runway of the former military airfield will be extended.
