A sign-in campaign for a referendum on the development of nuclear energy in Bulgaria and the construction of a nuclear power plant at Belene will be launched this week, Yanaki Stoilov MP from left-wing opposition Coalition for Bulgaria said.
"We have only three months to collect the signatures of 500,000 citizens - the number required to obligate the National Assembly to convene a referendum," state-run Bulgarian News Agency quoted Stoilov as saying on Thursday.
The ballot question proposed for the referendum is: "Should nuclear power generation in Bulgaria develop by constructing a nuclear power plant on the Belene site?"
Bulgaria decided to halt the construction of the 2,000 megawatt (MW) power plant Belene at the end of March, choosing instead to add a new 1,000 MW unit to its existing nuclear power station in Kozloduy.
