Iliopoulos: Government standing by as households struggle to stay afloat

"Those who claimed all this time that markets self-regulate and that free market competition will lower prices have presided over an explosion of prices and stand by as households struggle to stay afloat," main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance spokesperson Nasos Iliopoulos said on Tuesday.

He accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of trying to conceal his responsibility by blaming price rises on international conditions "but fails to answer why Greece has an unfortunate first place in Europe for the high price of electricity, nor why the Competition Commission and Regulatory Authority for Energy do not intervene to stop the cartels and price fixing."

He also noted that many other countries, among them France and Spain, were getting ready to announce substantial increases in the minimum wage to increase purchasing power.

Iliopoulos said the prime minister should put a stop to uncontrolled profiteering and "set aside his neoliberal obsessions and the service of interests", taking initiatives in this direction, such as an increase in the minimum wage, a programme to subsidise the cost of electricity and lowering the prices charged by the PPC to push the energy market downward, while blocking large bonuses for ND 'golden boys'.
