Head of New Democracy MEPs Meimarakis urges top EU, UNESCO officials to salvage Hagia Sophia

The Vice-President of the Parliamentary Group of the European People's Party & Head of New Democracy's group of European Parliament MEPs, Vangelis Meimarakis, on Thursday sent an official letter to top EU and UNESCO officials urging action against Turkey's decision to turn the Hagia Sophia protected global monument to a mosque.

In a letter addressed to both EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs & Security Policy, Josep Borrell, and UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azulay, Meimarakis calls on the two officials to take "the necessary measures" to salvage "this World Heritage Site" as well as protect "international agreements, the UNESCO framework and European values and principles."
