Greek president, premier address Parliament event on International Women's Day

The Greek Parliament honored International Women's Day on Monday with an event addressed by President Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The event consisted of the joint meeting of the Equality, Youth and Human Rights Committee with the Social Affairs Committee.

Sakellaropoulou was invited to address the event by Parliament President Constantine Tassoulas and focused on the "steady, sure, positive steps of women's progress in time."

The authoritarian behavior that has surfaced within families, professions and sectors and resulted in exploitation and violence against women cannot be fought by laws alone, she said. Changes will be few "unless mentalities and belief systems deeply rooted in our society are overturned," she stressed, and stereotypes and gender discrimination are torn down by consistent reeducation.
