Government policy making police a 'factor for insecurity', Iliopoulos says

The government's policy is making the police force "a factor of insecurity for society," main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance spokesperson Nasos Iliopoulos said on Friday.

Referring to the incident in Perama, he said that the audio evidence that was released clearly showed that the police officers taking part in the pursuit defied orders from their superiors to stand down and stop the chase.

He expressed surprise that conservative politicians had so easily accepted the fact that police officers were failing to follow orders.

"The major problem, however, is that this is not an isolated incident," he added, citing a string of incidents involving police officers engaging in various forms of misconduct or illegal activities.

"The problem is political. The policy exercised by New Democracy as regards the police, the way it is training and recruiting to the force is converting the police into a factor of insecurity for society and the citizens," Iliopoulos said.

Referring to the pandemic, he pointed out that the death toll for October was already at 973 people, while the government was repeatedly signalling the "defeat" of the pandemic and an easing of the measures, while merging classrooms and cutting funding for the national health system.

On high prices, finally, he repeated proposals for an increase of the minimum wage to 800 euros a month, lowering the special consumption tax for fuel and intervention to lower electricity rates.
