GERB Warns EU To Halt Funds for Key Infrastructure Projects, Incumbents Say Not True
Thursday, 10 October 2013
The opposition centre-right GERB party warned that Bulgaria stands to lose millions of euro of EU funding for two key infrastructure projects, the Bulgarian News Agency, BTA, reported.
The European Commission has halted 131 million euro in financing for the projects for the construction of a tunnel below the Shipka Mount and for a section of Sofia's bypass road, Tomislav Donchev, MP from GERB and former EU funds management minister, told a news briefing in Parliament, as quoted by BTA.
According to Donchev, funding for the projects was frozen because the incumbent Socialist-led government had failed to honour its commitments to the European Commission.
Speaking from Brussels later in the day, deputy prime minister Zinaida Zlatanova denied the claims. In her words, GERB are “manipulating the facts”, news agency Focus reported.
