Finance Minister: BAS has contributed nothing to scientific research or the economy

Bulgarian Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Simeon Dyankov has said that the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) has contributed nothing to science or the Bulgarian economy, Dnevnik daily reported on May 13 2010.Dyankov reportedly made the statement during a financial corporate conference in Washington, where he said that "we have an academy of sciences, which employs about 8000 staff - more than the tax officers in the entire country"."And yet, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has contributed nothing in the fields of science or the economy of the country," he added. This was the latest criticism addressed by the Finance Minister towards BAS after Dyankov previously branded the institution's employees as "synoptic elders", or people completely out of touch with the economy or the reality of modern science. This latest attack comes against the background of anticipated Government reform of the BAS, plans hotly opposed by the organisation's leadership.Parliament initiated its reforms to BAS on May 12 with Education Minister Sergey Ignatov outlining restructuring plans that BAS personnel strongly oppose.Among outlined reforms will be the elimination of the central executive board of the academy so that all branches within the institution will have greater independence. They will be able to process and manage their own funding resources accordingly, and will not have to be under the direct control of that particular central executive agency - which is deemed superfluous.Additionally, all properties belonging to the academy, most of which were donated, will become public property.BAS countered by comparing the Education Minister with Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, and described the proposed reforms as "outrageous and dictatorial".
