Thursday, 09 November 2017
Bulgaria's natural place is in the Schengen area, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told a press conference after a meeting with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and the joint session between the Bulgarian government and the EU Commissioners, FOCUS News Agency reported.
As for the euro area, Juncker said he admired the performance and results of Bulgaria, including a budget balance and low public debt.
Regarding the Western Balkans, he said that the European perspective should remain open for the region.
The motto of the Bulgarian EU presidency in 2018, United We Stand Strong, is a true statement that will be proved during the six-month Bulgarian presidency of the Council of the EU, Juncker said. “Bulgaria will be the capital of Europe during the six months, and this is a unique opportunity for this beautiful country, for the wonderful Bulgarian people to prove, to show that Bulgarians know what Europe is. Because Europe is part of Bulgaria’s DNA and the country has behaved as a founder of the EU since the first day of its accession, while the actual founders not always behave as such,” he added.
