Environment Ministry Completes Water Management and Biodiversity Programmes
Tuesday, 01 August 2017
The Ministry of Environment has successfully completed the implementation of Programme BG02 for integrated management of sea and interior waters and Programme BG03 for biodiversity and ecosystems, the ministry’s press office said.
The goals were achieved through 38 projects, supported by the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area 2009-2014.
The main projects under the BG02 programme included studies to complement the plans for river management. Also, marine expeditions were carried out for exploration and for provision of missing data and tools for the evaluation of the condition of marine environment. Different species were studied as bioindicators for the chemical contamination of Black Sea, Danube River and other freshwater basins. The safety of sea and freshwater organisms as a food resource was also evaluated.
Under the BG03 programme, over 600 volunteers were trained in monitoring biodiversity and entering data into the related information system. The programme created a national methodology for biophysical assessment of Bulgarian ecosystems. The methodology helped map and evaluate the nine types of ecosystems in Bulgaria in accordance with the EU’s Biodiversity Strategy 2020.
