The European Investment Bank (EIB) said it is considering lending 21 million euro ($29.2 million) to Bulgaria to co-finance the rehabilitation of drinking water supply and distribution networks in the Pleven region, in the northern part of the country.
The project also includes the reconstruction, expansion and modernisation of the Pleven wastewater treatment plant, EIB said.
The scheme will contribute to meeting Bulgaria's needs in relation to compliance with the EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive.
The total cost of the project is estimated at 82 million euro. Beneficiaries of the water project will be the municipalities of Pleven and Dolna Mitropolia.
Bulgaria has requested co-financing from the EU structural funds under the operational programme Environment and the Joint Assistance to Support Projects in European Regions (JASPERS) has been actively involved in the project preparation, according to EIB.
