Economy Ministry Takes Over Dams Management

Bulgaria economy minister Traicho Traikov was put in charge of the control of the technical state and safety of all dams in the country, irrespective of their ownership, the state-run Bulgarian National Radio reported.

Traikov will be authorised to take coercive administrative measures, ensuring that people's safety comes first, BNR quoted environment ministry Nona Karadjova as saying.

The government's decision comes after it emerged that a dispute over the ownership of the Ivanovo dam between the local authorities and the defence ministry dating back to 2003 had prevented repairs of the facility even though a rupture had been established several years ago. The wall of the dam burst on Monday flooding a village and claiming eight lives.
