EC Oks 16.7 Mln Euro Financing for Improving Air Quality in Bulgaria

The European Commission said on Friday that it has approved financing of 16.7 million euro under the LIFE programme for a project aimed at improving air quality in six major Bulgarian municipalities. The project intends to help he municipalities of Sofia, Burgas, Veliko Tarnovo, Montana, Ruse, and Stara Zagora to achieve an air quality that meets legal requirements, the EU institution said in a statement. "For instance, the project will pilot the replacement of polluting household heating systems and will draft national recommendations for the transition to alternative forms of heating," the Commission said.In November last year, the European Commission said that it has urged Bulgaria to comply with a ruling of the Court of Justice of the EU in 2017, in relation to the country's failure to adhere to limit values for concentration of PM10 in the ambient air."
