The European Commission said on Thursday that it has asked Bulgaria to adopt a national programme for the management of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management policy.Bulgaria now has two months to reply to the arguments raised by the Commission, or the EU institution may decide to send a reasoned opinion, the Commission said in its monthly infringements package.If the Commission sends a reasoned opinion, Bulgaria will have a further two months to comply with its recommendations, or the country could be referred to the Court of Justice of the EU.Bulgaria is currently in the process of building a National Disposal Facility, located on land adjacent to its sloe nuclear power plant Kozloduy. The facility, which is expected to be completed in 2021, will serve for disposal of short-lived low and intermediate level radioactive wastes generated in Bulgaria, mainly from the decommissioning of Units 1-4 of Kozloduy.
