Culture and environment ministry initiative for dangerous derelict buildings

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni and the Deputy Environment and Energy Minister Nikos Tagaras are working on new legislation that aims to speed up the process for demolishing dangerous buildings that are at risk of collapsing, an environment ministry press release said on Monday.

The legislation will set up a Special Committee for Dangerously Derelict Buildings that will be responsible for inspecting and taking decisions for the demolition of buildings judged to be in danger of falling down.

Its main aim will be to circumvent time-consuming bureaucratic processes that may involve multiple meetings convening on the same issue, sometimes issuing contradictory decisions, as an urgent issue of public safety.
