Central Athens Redevelopment Project Gets Eco Min Approval

A 78.5 million euro project for the redevelopment of the Panepistimiou-Patission axis, the extension of the tram line and related traffic measures in downtown Athens received approval from the country's environment ministry, the Athens News Agency-Macedonian Press Agency reported.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2016. The project envisages an extension of the tram line from Syntagma Square to Egyptou Square via the Amalias, Panepistimiou and Patission streets, as well as a revamp of the public space between Acadimias and Stadiou streets, and interventions on Amalias and Patission streets up to Egiptou Square.

Athens' Syntagma and Omonia Squares will be turned into “green urban squares”, and Dikeossinis Square and Korai Street will be transformed into a free public space.
