I do believe these wise men in the European Parliament, European Union and the Council of Europe will take the right decision and appreciate the progress our countries have done," said Bulgaria's PM Boiko Borisov commenting the accession of Bulgaria and Romania into the Schengen Treaty.
The European Parliament supports the full-fledged Schengen membership of Bulgaria and Romania, because this Treaty is the most convincing evidence that the European Union is working," said President of the EP Jerzy Buzek adding that the Union has to convince another two or three member states to approve of the enlargement and he felt optimistic that this was to happen in the next coming months.
A day later, during the joint sitting of the Bulgarian and Romanian cabinets the premiers of the two neighboring countries signed a declaration on the Schengen membership. "In addition to their commitments under the Accession Treaty, the two countries successfully carried out their preparation to apply the Schengen regulations.
Their readiness was recognized by the European Parliament with a majority vote on June 6, 2011. At its sitting on June 9, 2011, the Justice and Home Affairs Council concluded that the assessment process was over and the two countries were ready to join the Schengen area following a decision of the Council that should be taken not later than September 2011.
On the grounds of the positive evaluation of the European parliament and the JHA Council, and with the support of the European Commission, in June 2011 the Council of Europe said that the issue should be resolved in the autumn of 2011," the declaration reads./Source: Standart Daily/
