Bulgaria's coalition government led by Prime Minister Kiril Petkov submitted its resignation

Bulgaria's coalition government led by Prime Minister Kiril Petkov submitted its resignation on Monday after losing a no-confidence vote last week, the government's press service said.

Under the Constitution, Bulgarian president Rumen Radev will now ask the largest group in parliament - Petkov's We Continue the Change (WCC) - to form a new cabinet within seven days. If they fail, the president will task the second biggest party - GERB, led by former prime minister Boyko Borissov - to form a government, which if unsuccessful will need to pass the mandate to a third political formation to try to put together a cabinet.

Failing a third attempt to form a government in the current parliament, the president will appoint a caretaker cabinet and call snap general elections.

The resignation of the six-month-old coalition cabinet comes after it lost on Wednesday a no-confidence motion filed by GERB. A total 123 MPs out of 239 voting backed the motion.

WCC governed together with socialist party BSP, anti-status quo, pro-reform Democratic Bulgaria coalition and former junior government coalition partner There Is Such a People (TISP) which left the coalition earlier this month.
