Bulgaria's annual inflation speeds up to 9.1% in Jan

Bulgaria's consumer prices rose by 9.1% year-on-year in January following an annual increase of 7.8% in December, the statistical office said on Tuesday, citing preliminary data.

On a monthly comparison basis, consumer prices added 1.5% in the first month of 2022 after rising by 0.9% in December, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said in a monthly inflation report.

In January, the highest annual price increase, of 21.3%, was registered in the transport sector, which has the third-highest weight in the consumer basket, the NSI said.

Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which have the largest weight in the consumer basket, rose by an annual 11.2% last month. Prices in the other major category - housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, increased by 13.2% on the year in the month under review.

Bulgaria’s EU-harmonised consumer price index (HICP) rose by 7.7% on an annual comparison basis in January 2022 and was 1.2% higher than its December reading.


Bulgaria's household income rises 12.8% y/y in Q4, spending up 12.1%

The average income per household member in Bulgaria increased by 12.8% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2021, while the average household expenditure per capita rose by 12.1%, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said on Tuesday.

A household member spent 1,885 levs ($1,091.1/963.8 euro) on average in the October-December period of last year, while their income amounted to 2,037 levs, the NSI said in a statement.

Wages and salaries formed 55.7% of household income, followed by pensions and self-employment income with 31.3% and 4.9%, respectively.

Expenses for food and non-alcoholic beverages made up 29.3% of total household expenditure, while expenditure on housing accounted for 19.2%.

Taxes and social insurance contributions constituted 12.6% of total household spending in the fourth quarter, followed by transport and communication services with 11.3%.
