Bulgarian Prime Minister nominates new Health Minister

Anna Maria Borissova will succeed Bozhidar Nanev as Health Minister Prime Minister, Boiko Borissov told reporters on April 7 2010.

Nanev was forced to resign from his post on March 30 after prosecutors pressed charges against him in the case of the purchase of 200 000 packs of the antiviral drug Tamiflu during the worldwide outbreak of influenza A (H1N1) in December 2009.

According to prosecutors, the ministry reviewed two bids for the delivery of the drug and chose that of the Roche Bulgaria, although the other offer from the UK's National Health Service (NHS) would have cost 2.4 million leva less. That way Nanev has made an unreasonable spending of Budget funds.

Like Nanev, who is a surgeon, Borissova also comes from the health care sector. She is the head of the clinic for metabolic bone diseases at the Sofia's Endocrinology Hospital. She is also head of the Bulgarian Endocrinology Society.

According to Bulgarian-language daily Dnevnik, in 2006 Borissova has taken part in a public presentation of an osteoporosis medication produced by Roche.
