Bulgarian President Approves Government's Efforts for Schengen Membership

President Georgi Purvanov expressed before the EU ambassadors to Bulgaria his positive assessment and support for the government's efforts for Schengen membership, Purvanov's Press Secretariat said Tuesday.

Purvanov attended a working lunch with the ambassadors organized by Belgian Ambassador Marc Michielsen on the occasion of the end of Belgium's EU Presidency.The President underscored that all Bulgarian institutions expect the country's accession to Schengen will be based on the procedure and time limits of the last enlargement of the Schengen Area and will not involve any other issues. 

The topics discussed at the meeting were from the Bulgarian and European agenda. The ambassadors commented on the country's efforts to achieve positive results in the fight against organized crime and corruption and the legislative changes in this sphere; the prospects for the implementation of the main energy projects; Bulgaria's contribution to the implementation of the Europe 2020 Strategy; strengthening regional cooperation and the construction of European transport corridors; challenges  before the next EU Presidency.
