Bulgaria to Invest BGN 370 M in Army Reform

The ongoing reform in Bulgaria's Army will cost the taxpayers some BGN 369 M over the course of the next four years.

This is announced in the government's strategy on the armed forces' development.

By the end of 2014 the Bulgarian Army is supposed to be 26 100 strong, which means 6 000 soldiers will be made redundant.

Some BGN 115 M will be spent on compensations during the above mentioned period, with laid off soldiers receiving BGN 50 M and BGN 43 M in 2012 and 2013 resperctively. BGN 15 M will be spent for that purpose in 2011.

In 2011, the Defense Ministry will have a budget of BGN 990 M, BGN 100 M more than in 2010. The additional fund will go for capital spending - construction and repairs of existing facilities.
