Bulgaria's municipal elections to be held on October 23 2011

Municipal elections in Bulgaria will take place on October 23 2011 after President Georgi Purvanov issued an official decree, Focus news agency reported on June 20 2011.On June 15 2011 the Bulgarian Parliament had also decided to hold presidential elections on the same day, October 23.The date for the presidential elections was proposed by MPs from ruling party GERB. The measure was approved with 101 votes in favour, 50 abstentions and four against, the report said.MPs rejected a proposal tabled by the ultra-nationalist leader of Ataka, Volen Siderov, who proposed that the date should not be declared until all political parties have named their candidates for the election.On June 13 it was announced that Roumen Hristov, from the Bulgarian Union of Democratic Forces party, UDF, had won the Blue Coalition's nomination to be the candidate for the presidency.Meglena Kouneva, Bulgaria's former European Commissioner and current political adviser to the office of Siim Kallas, the European Commission's vice-president and commissioner for transport, become a presidential candidate officially on June 6 2011.Political party Order Law and Justice (OLJ) announced Atanas Semov for its presidential candidate on June 20 2011.Ruling party GERB are yet to announce their candidate./Source: The Sofia Echo/
