Addressing Parliament on Thursday, President Rosen Plevneliev described the National Strategy for Bulgaria's Development 2020 as a top priority and promised that it will be drafted by the end of the year.
"This long-term strategy should be implemented as an action plan and it could give a trump card in the hands of the government within the financial stability pact," state-run Bulgarian National Radio quoted Plevneliev as saying.
Plevneliev highlighted the importance of job creation, energy efficiency and diversification of energy supplies. Bulgaria is a world champion in wasting energy and will need to allocate at least 1.0 billion levs ($668 million/511 million euro) to energy efficiency measures. Urgent steps are needed to combat youth unemployment through quality education and rapid transition from education to employment.
He urged the National Assembly to make legislative changes in support of small and medium-sized businesses facilitating access to foreign markets and bank loans and streamlining trademarks registration.
