Bulgaria's 2011 Cherry Crop Rises 20.5%

Bulgaria's cherry crop last year reached 30,063 tonnes, up by 20.5%, the agriculture ministry said.

Cherry exports rose by 45% last year and accounted for 6.7% of the total crop, as the top foreign markets were Britain, Russia, Romania and Moldova, the ministry said in a statement.

Greece was the biggest cherry importer in Bulgaria, followed by Poland and Turkey.

The total area of cherry orchards in Bulgaria last year was 8,579 hectares.
