At the end of 2017, Bulgaria had achieved 60.7% of its national target for energy savings by 2020, the government said on Wednesday. The country saved 5,000 GWh during the period 2014-2017 thanks to its measures spanning all sectors of the economy, the government said in a statement following its weekly meeting. The achieved energy savings decrease the country's dependency on conventional fuel imports, the government noted. Bulgaria's energy savings strategy targets final energy consumption of 8.6 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) in 2020, according to data from the European Commission.Bulgaria is heavily dependent on Russian gas supplies. The country imports almost all the gas required to cover its domestic needs from Russia via a single pipeline from Ukraine through Romania.
