Bulgaria's Q1 household expenditure growth outpaces income rise

The average household expenditure per capita in Bulgaria rose 11% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2019, while the average income per household member increased by 8%, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said on Thursday.

Household members spent an average of 1,403 levs (717euro) during the first quarter, while their income amounted to 1,519 levs in the same period, NSI said in a statement.

Expenses for food accounted for 30.2% of the total household expenditure, while expenditure on housing cost a further 18.2%.Taxes and social insurance contributions constituted 14.0% of the total expenditure, followed by transport and communications with 12.1%.

Wages and salaries formed 57.6% of the total household income, followed by pensions and self-employment income with 27.9% and 6.4%, respectively.
