Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev held the traditional reception for heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Bulgaria, on Friday, January 22.
The event took place at the National Museum of History and President Plevneliev delivered a speech.
“We saw a difficult year of high tension and a lack of predictability. Failed countries, frozen conflicts, including hybrid and conventional ones, terror attacks, an unprecedented migration wave, a record high number of crises and immigrants, and great instability have been seen in the past year,” he said.
The high-ranking official was explicit the security environment and global agenda had deteriorated or fully changed.
“Despite challenges, Bulgaria has been a factor of stability in the region and the EU in the past year. We had a responsible role as a pro-European force on the Balkans and a responsible EU and NATO country. 2015 was a year of an active Bulgarian foreign policy based on principles,” Rosen Plevneliev commented.
“We respect refugees’ human rights but we also protect our borders well. We work for connectivity and integration on the Balkans but we also expect the rules and principles of good neighbourly relations and objective representation of our common history to be observed by everyone,” the official opined, adding in the past year “Bulgaria has been a source not of problems but of solutions”.
In his speech, the Head of State noted Bulgaria should show more ambition.
“We want to launch a new wave of European integration projects, for instance, joining the ERM II currency mechanism, then euro zone membership, a full-rights Schengen zone membership, and sped-up development of the European Energy Union. Now we can prove in practice there are no big or small countries in the EU namely because everyone could be part of the solution if he or she is active and ambitious,” the President commented.
