Brussels Threatens to Halt Permanently Environmental Payments to Bulgaria

The European Commission has notified Bulgaria that it may halt permanently payments under the Environment Operational Programme, the Bulgarian National Radio reported.

A decision could be adopted in the coming months to stop payments amounting to 182 million euro to Bulgaria, unless it makes progress on the issues identified by the European Commission, mostly related to tenders, supervision and management, the broadcaster reported, quoting Shirin Wheeler, spokesperson of the EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn.

Funds for Bulgaria under the programme were temporarily frozen in November. If permanently halted, payments could only be restored with a decision of the College of Commissioners.
