Brussels Approves 29.5 Mln Euro Upgrade of Athens Public Transport Ticketing System

The European Commission on Monday approved a 29.5-million-euro investment financed by the EU Regional Development Fund to upgrade the Athens public transport ticket system, the Athens News Agency-Macedonian Press Agency reported.
Under the project, electronic “smart tickets” for the metro will replace conventional tickets, and a new  modern ticket validation and passenger boarding system will be introduced.
The project is an important step toward the modernization of mass transport in Athens, the news agency quoted European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn as saying.
