Bill on new agency of accessibility for disabled people voted on

A draft bill establishing an agency on accessibility for people with disabilities, among other topics, was voted in Parliament on the strength of ruling New

Democracy and opposition Movement for Change (KINAL) on Tuesday evening, after plenary debate.

Main opposition SYRIZA, the Communist Party and MeRA25 voted against it, while Greek Solution voted "present".

State Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis introduced impovements in legislation proposed by parties and agencies for the bill formally titled "National Authority for Accessibility, National Committee for the Rights of Humans and the National Committee of Bioethics and Technoethics."

Gerapetritis called on all parties to approve the bill, saying "the opportunities where we may agree on the basics do not come around frequently. This is such a case, and I ask you to support it."

He said the new authority developed out of two existing national committees and was an initiative of the National Confederation of Persons with Disabilities, "for the enforcement of human rights". He rejected criticism that it was the government's attempt to extend its party support base.
