Belene NPP Will Cost 10.2 Bln Euro – Econ Min

Economy minister Delyan Dobrev said that Belene nuclear power plant project consultant HSBC has estimated the project costs at over 20 billion levs ($12.5 billion/10.2 billion euro) under the best-case scenario.

Bulgaria cannot afford to build a plant which will cost more than the assets of the entire energy sector in the country, estimated at 12 billion levs, Dobrev said in an interview aired by the state-run Bulgarian National Television.

Dobrev reiterated his view that the only option for the plant's construction was in partnership with a strategic investor but such never showed up.

"Before Bulgarians decide in favour or against the Belene project, they should be aware of the facts and costs of the project," the economy minister added commenting on the Bulgarian Socialist Party's demands for holding a referendum on the project.
