Greece firmly supports efforts to reunite Cyprus, President Pavlopoulos says
26 09 2019President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos underlined Greece's firm support for efforts to reunite Cyprus in a congratulatory letter to Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades on Wednesday, marking the 59th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Cyprus.
The president's letter is as follows:
"On the occasion of the 59th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Cyprus, please accept, on behalf of the Greek People and myself, the warmest wishes for the freedom, security, progress and prosperity of Cypriot Hellenism and all Cypriots.
I take this opportunity to express, during the current critical conjuncture for the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue, Greece's firm support for the efforts to reunite Cyprus. A reunification that can be achieved within the framework of a just and mutually acceptable solution, on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal but viable and functional Federation, in accordance with the relevant United Nations' decisions and in full harmony with the European Union's acquis and Cyprus' status as a member-state of the EU and its inner core, the eurozone. Essential conditions for this are, of course, the withdrawal of occupation troops and the abolition of the anachronistic guarantee system and third-party intervention rights.
Unfortunately, in the recent period, the Republic of Cyprus has also been confronted with a continuing, direct violation of its sovereignty and the dispute of its sovereign rights within its maritime zones, in violation of international law. In the face of these illegal actions, which are contrary to both international law and European law - and therefore against European principles and policies - Cyprus and Greece jointly present all legal, European and international peaceful means.
Mr President of the Republic of Cyprus, I would like to reassure you that all the social and political forces of the nation will continue to stand at the side of the Republic of Cyprusm with unanimity, persistence, calmness and determination."
